This sweet lady is my grandmother, or as I affectionately call her "Mamaw." She turned 93 years old this last December - one day before my birthday. We were born one day and 51 years apart. We share our birthday week and many other qualities. She is strong willed, some might even say hard headed, feisty, opinionated, and LOUD. For everyone who says I talk loud, let me tell you it is genetic, honest! She is the only living grandparent I had growing up, so all that love was funneled into all sweet 4' 11" of her! Growing up, I used to love spending a month of the summer with her every year. It started the summer her husband died & continued through my junior high years. Most grandmothers teach you to cook, but not mine... since it was just the two of us, we went out to dinner every night! She was very social and there was always something to do. She used to live in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and owned some apartments. No one in TorC is under 50, so it was mostly snow birds that rented her apartments, and as you can imagine when I went to stay with her, it was like having 5 or 6 grandparents at once. We played cards once a week, went to bingo at the VFW hall, and she taught me how to do needlepoint and cross stitch. It was a "simple" time in my life that seems so long ago & so foreign & impossible to have now.
I was scared beyond words when I got the call the week of Christmas that she was in a bad car wreck with my aunt & uncle on their way down to spend Christmas with us. She broke her pelvis & could not walk. There is no treatment for a broke pelvis, so she is staying with my aunt until her 93 year old bones mend. She assures me she will be "good as new - real soon." I pray that is the case. Before the accident, she still lived alone & she loves her independence. Her baby sister (who is in her 80s!) lives next door and they provide a lot of company to one another. My mom is there now helping my aunt to take care of her & she is taking a few steps now & the dr said she is healing nicely. Nevertheless, she will probably need some physical therapy after being immobile for so long.
I love her more than words can say and I admire her strength and spunk. I can only pray to live as long and be half as sharp as she is. I love you Mamaw!
